One of Amazon’s few great shows, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is coming to an end. That means its star, Rachel Brosnahan is free to move on, with her profile dramatically escalated after a five season run of the stellar series.
Brosnahan was listed on a shortlist of names who have allegedly auditioned for James Gunn’s Superman Legacy, along with Emma Mackey and Samara Weaving, as potential Lois Lanes. Gunn did not deny the report outright, the sourcing is from the pretty trustworthy The Wrap, and now Brosnahan herself has commented on the rumors during an appearance on The View:
While warning to take everything on the internet with a grain of salt, she goes on to say, “Look, it would be extraordinary. I grew up watching Lois Lane, this incredibly talented journalist, who is far from a damsel in distress, and I would jump at the chance if it arose.”
It seems borderline impossible that with that answer, Brosnahan has not at least auditioned for the part. Part of the rumor was a note that Brosnahan in particular gave a “strong” audition, something not noted about any other actress, nor any of the potential Superman or Lex Luthor picks.
In what will no doubt be a more upbeat, colorful version of the Man of Steel, it’s easy to see how Brosnahan could easily slip into that role. Lois and Mrs. Maisel already share at least some measure of personality, and seeing Brosnahan channeling that energy while not doing the Maisel “voice,” you could certainly imagine her in the part.
Brosnahan has already racked up an Emmy for her work on Mrs. Maisel, and would indeed seem to be the strongest candidate. That said, this could go one of many different ways, and an early “frontrunner” may not pan out in the end. While part of me wonders if she should have said anything at all, I guess she was sort of put on the spot on The View and gave the best answer that she could have. But unlike most other floating random rumors from like comicbookalphascoops.com, this one seems to have at least some air of legitimacy.
While the casting of Superman himself is no doubt the key to making all this work, as he’d have to join a bunch of stellar renditions of the character (we don’t talk about Dean Cain), Lois and Lex will also be an integral part of this, and sure, I’d love to see Brosnahan onboard. We’ll have to see what happens, and I would not expect anything like an imminent announcement if auditions are still ongoing.
