Ex-Las Vegas Raiders player Henry Ruggs III pleaded guilty Wednesday to a high-speed drunk driving crash that killed a woman and her dog about a year and a half ago, and will face three to 10 years in a Nevada state prison.
Key Facts
Ruggs, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence resulting in death and one count of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, according to ESPN.
The conviction and sentence cannot be appealed by Ruggs, who will remain under house arrest until his August 9 sentencing.
Key Background: Ruggs, a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, was a wide receiver with the Las Vegas Raiders for two seasons before the November 2021 crash. West of the Las Vegas Strip, Ruggs was driving at speeds up to 156 mph—more than three times the speed limit—and attempted to panic-stop before rear-ending another vehicle driven by Tina Tintor, 23, according to prosecutors. The Clark County coroner’s office concluded that Tintor and her dog died of “thermal injuries due to a motor vehicle collision.” Kiara Je’nai Kilgo-Washington, Ruggs’ girlfriend, was a passenger in his car and was severely injured. Prosecutors say a blood test showed Ruggs’ blood alcohol content was 0.16, twice the legal limit. Ruggs was released from the Raiders on the same day as the crash.
Tangent: Derek Carr, the starting quarterback at the time of Ruggs’ crash, responded to the incident, saying that Ruggs needs to be loved and that “if no one else will do it, I’ll do it.”
