What To Stream This Week On Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV And More

The weekend is almost upon us and with it a bevy of new TV shows, movies and other content to stream on all the myriad streaming services we are expected to subscribe to, from Netflix to Paramount+ to Apple TV+ to lesser known offerings like MGM+. Lots of pluses.

Each week I’m bringing you this ongoing list of shows and movies that I’m watching or excited to watch—stuff that I think my readers will enjoy, ranging from creepy horror dramas to animated fantasy shows and detective mysteries. Here on this blog, I cover everything from Star Wars to zombie shows to crime dramas, so expect a mix each week.

I’m breaking this list up into two sections: The first is “New This Week” which covers new streaming content that’s either just come out or is about to come out this weekend. Sometimes this section will also include things I missed the week before—it’s impossible to keep up with everything!

The second section is “Ongoing Shows” which will include shows that are still airing but that I think people should tune into. Often, but not always, these will be shows I write recaps for. I may also include a “Bonus” section for older stuff that I’ve come across and, well, bonus stuff. You get the gist.

So, without further adieu, let’s dive right in!

(You can see last week’s list of streaming content here).

New This Week

Star Wars Visions 2 (Disney+)

The first season of Star Wars Visions was a set of short films made by Japanese studios that was truly awesome. The second season follows the same idea, but this time each of the shorts is made by a different European studio. Once again, the diversity of ideas and animation styles is truly breathtaking, making this one of the best Star Wars releases in the Disney era.

Bonus: Star Wars Young Jedi Adventures for the younglings (the very younglings). This one also released on May the 4th, but it’s geared toward a very young audience and I tuned out halfway through the first episode. Your little kids will enjoy it I imagine!

Citadel (Amazon Prime Video)

Amazon’s Citadel released last weekend but I somehow missed it on my list last week, so here we have it in our New This Week section. I haven’t gotten around to watching just yet—I admit I was a little turned off by all the negative reviews—but I’m going to dive in this weekend and catch up because honestly this is right up my alley and how bad could it be? Audiences seem to like it a lot more than critics and I tend to find critics often very out of touch. I love good spy thrillers, and even if this is derivative, so long as it’s a good time I’m down. I just finished Bodyguard which was a thriller starring Richard Madden and I loved it, so I’m definitely down for more Madden. I’m not really familiar with Priyanka Chopra Jonas but I’ve heard good things. Have you watched this yet? What did you think? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story

Another series I never got into was Bridgerton on Netflix despite being something of a sap for sexy romances (I have this vague notion that maybe I could do well as a romance novelist). I kept meaning to watch this when it came out but I was going through a major breakup with my then long-term girlfriend and the last thing I wanted in my life was a romance TV show. So . . . maybe it’s time to catch up, or maybe I’ll just start with the prequel! I just need a few extra hours per day, please.

Silo (Apple TV+)

Apple’s Silo is the one I’m most excited for this week. Starring Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson, it’s a show about a future dystopia where everybody lives in a giant silo that goes hundreds of stories below the earth. Nobody really knows why they’re down there. They live under a repressive regime. It sounds like exactly the sort of dystopian future sci-fi show that I’m always on the lookout for. This one airs this Friday so I’ll be watching and reviewing here on this blog.

Bonus: The Dune Part 2 trailer is so bloody good, oh my god.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (VOD)

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is my favorite movie of 2023 so far. I saw it twice in theaters, which I never do, and now that it’s streaming I’m going to buy it. That’s the only way to watch at the moment. It’s not free on any streaming service, but can be purchased for $19.99 on various platforms. I almost never buy movies anymore, but I’m buying this one and I’m going to have a movie night with my parents, even though they don’t play D&D. It’s just that good!

Ongoing Shows

White House Plumbers (HBO Max)

I’ve watched one episode of HBO’s new political comedy limited-series, White House Plumbers and honestly thought it was great. The story of the men behind the Nixon Watergate scandal is already a fascinating one, but in the hands of Justin Theroux and Woody Harrelson—both of whom ham the hell out of their roles—it’s also genuinely funny. You can read my review of the series premiere right here.

Mrs. Davis (Paramount+)

I’m keeping this one on my list despite not having watched it yet because I’m hearing great things and I’m reminding myself—by way of this list!—what to watch. Note to self: Watch and write about Mrs. Davis, Erik!

The premise is basically this: Elizabeth Abbot (Betty Gilpin, GLOW) has her life ruined when she’s ousted from her convent (she’s a nun) and goes out on a mission of vengeance to destroy a powerful AI called Mrs. Davis. Secret societies, religious conspiracies and more follow. That sounds great, honestly. My only excuse for not starting this one yet is that there are so many shows out right now.

Succession (HBO)

We’re rapidly approaching the extra-long series finale of Succession, which I’m both hugely excited for and rather dreading, if we’re being honest. I’ll miss these rich, spoiled, ridiculous bastards when they’re gone. I’ll miss writing about them. Having just binged the whole show in April, I feel like the Roy family and its hangers-on just came into my life, and now they’re almost gone. Truly some of the best writing and acting out there at the moment.

Check out my discussion of the best and worst characters right here.

Rabbit Hole (Paramount+)

Kiefer Sutherland and Charles Dance in the same trippy thriller series? How could you not want to watch that? Dance—who played Tywin Lannister in Game Of Thrones—is delightful in this series, and Sutherland seems to be having a genuinely great time as well. 24 fans will be pleased. (And yes, now I’ve mentioned both 24 and Lost in the same post). I won’t give away any details here. Suffice to say, by the end of the first episode your expectations for what this show is going to be about will have gone on quite the dizzying ride.

From Season 2 (MGM+)

If you haven’t seen or heard of this one, I don’t blame you! It’s the most underrated show on TV as far as I’m concerned, and that’s because nobody knows about MGM+ (formerly Epix). Amazon owns MGM and what they really need to do is fold MGM+ into Amazon Prime Video. This would be a massive hit on Amazon Prime Video. Instead, it remains something of a delicious modern cult classic that only a select few know about. You could be part of that select few! Watch my video above if you’d like to see me gush over this wonderfully scary, mysterious “Lost-like.”

Here’s my Season 2 premiere review. Episode 2 was even better! Edit: My review of Episode 3 is up now also!

Barry (HBO)

Barry continues to be surprising and dark and weird this season. Alas, it’s the fourth and final season just like Succession! Bill Hader’s hit-man-turned-actor black comedy is as good as ever, and last week’s episode was super crazy. I’m still not sure if the ending of that episode was real or something Barry imagined. If it’s real, that’s a wild time-jump. Just a few episodes to go now!

Yellowjackets (Showtime)

We’re in the final stretch of Yellowjackets Season 2 and I’m definitely curious to see where this show is headed. I’m a little sad because Season 2, while still good, is nowhere near as amazing as the first season. Still, even if Season 1 is the only great season of this show, it remains one of the best in years. And who knows? Maybe this is growing pains. Sophomore effort is a real thing. You can’t always bottle lightning twice. Maybe Season 3 will recapture the magic. I’m also reviewing this show so look for my review of Episode 6 here on this blog.

Update: Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is a new show from Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky that just aired this Thursday on Adult Swim (and HBO Max after). The first episode is free to watch right now.

Bonus Round!

Okay, some bonus entries for this weekend’s list:

  • I’m behind on Sweet Tooth but the post-apocalyptic Netflix show is doing great in Season 2 and has already been renewed—which is crazy for Netflix, but a good sign!
  • I’m going to keep singing Beef’s praises. The Netflix dark comedy is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and you should watch it, even if the characters seem too unpleasant to care about. Trust me on this one! When have I ever led you astray?
  • Fear The Walking Dead returns next weekend, but airs early on AMC+ this coming Thursday. Oh baby, you know I’ll be there. Look for my season premiere review Thursday.
  • I watched the first episode of Florida Man on Netflix and kind of liked it. It was offbeat and quirky and had a fun twist. I don’t know how it’s getting zero percent on Rotten Tomatoes (it’s up to 22% now, actually) but I think I’ll keep watching. I like a mystery!
  • If you’re itching to get out and go see a movie in theaters, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is really, really, really good. I cannot recommend it enough, especially on a big screen.

What did I miss, dearest readers of mine? What TV shows are you watching at the moment? Any new movies out on streaming services that I should check out? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.
