- AI and ChatGPT are the new targets for malware, spammers, and scammers.
- Increasing scams related to AI are because of fueling interest towards ChatGPT
The rise in AI has also given rise to various manners of fraud, scams, and malware with the help of different AI instruments such as ChatGpt. It has become an unhealthy actor according to Meta’s safety staff analysis.
Increasing Spammers in AI
A report by Facebook’s parent Meta’s security team revealed that it has found around 10 malware acting as ChatGpt and other AI platforms and they were found in various browser extensions.
“Since March alone, our security analysts have found around 10 malware families posing as ChatGPT and similar tools to compromise accounts across the internet.”
Meta revealed that the reason for all these scammers, spammers, and malware moving to AI is because of its recent gain in popularity among the people and that this is the easiest way to catch people’s attention and imagination right now.
The research was conducted after AI, especially ChatGpt’s increase in popularity and the importance AI has been getting recently. They further added that these threat actors were offering and claiming to offer ChatGpt tools by cheating malware browser extensions. The security team of Meta Explained that these malware and malicious extensions coexisted with the ChatGpt functionality.
The security team also explained that these “bad actors” have a tendency to move where the latest wave of popularity prevails. Right now it’s digital currency, crypto, and AI. They further explained that this is not something new that these “bad actors” are doing. It has happened previously to different industries as well including the increasing crypto scams fueled by the interest in digital assets. The AI pace right now is evolving at a rapid pace and they are taking advantage of it, hence stricter vigilance is required.
Meta’s chief security officer, Guy Rosen stated in a recent interview with Reuters that AI has become the new crypto for these bad actors although he stated that Meta, however, is determined to make its own generative AI. Various augmented and artificial reality technologies are being improved by Meta AI by building various AI.
According to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, Meta AI is one of the single largest investments right now despite being heavily invested in Metaverse.
