Midtown Paralyzed As Police Seek Active Shooter

Topline

Atlanta police have shut down streets in the city’s Midtown area and are urging workers near a hospital to remain inside their buildings as officers search for an active shooter who killed one person and left at least three others injured, though police say they are also looking for more potential victims.

Key Facts

Police tweeted the shooter is “in the area of 1110 W Peachtree St NW”—the site of Northside Hospital Midtown’s medical office buildings.

Authorities released images of the suspect early Wednesday afternoon, which appeared to show a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a medical mask pointing a handgun into an office space.

Atlanta police identified the suspect just after 2:30 p.m. as 24-year-old Deion Patterson, calling him “Armed and Dangerous.”

There have been no additional shots fired since the initial shooting as of 1:30 p.m., according to police.

Atlanta Public Schools said in a statement that “several” schools have been placed under an “exterior lockdown” as police search for the shooter—the schools on lockdown were not immediately identified.
