Gavi Camp Makes Final Decision On Joining Chelsea From FC Barcelona

Gavi’s camp has made a final decision on the youngster’s potential move from FC Barcelona to Chelsea, according to El Nacional.

The youngster that broke through to the Barca first team in 2021 signed a new contract last year with a €1 billion ($1.01 billion) release clause.

The cash-strapped Catalans have had difficulties registering the fresh terms, however, and lost an appeal against La Liga which has seen Gavi embarrassingly stripped of Xavi’s iconic ‘6’ shirt and given back his old number ’30’.

Gavi can flee Camp Nou on a free transfer on July 1 if his situation isn’t rectified, in a development that has a number of top European clubs on alert.

One outfit that has thrown its hat into the ring is Chelsea, who as reported by AS earlier this month have already approached the midfielder’s agent De La Pena and have met him to sound out a potential switch.

League giants are willing to make Gavi one of the highest-paid players in both their team and the English top flight. Yet according to El Nacional, the teenage winner of the Golden Boy award won’t be running out for the Blues at Stamford Bridge any time soon.

This is because Chelsea’s new American owner Todd Boehly has rejected another client of De La Pena’s in Luis Enrique, as reported by The Telegraph.

De La Pena even traveled to the UK capital to negotiate a potential deal for the former Spain international, who could have replaced interim boss Frank Lampard as manager following Graham Potter’s dismissal.

Yet with Boehly deciding Enrique didn’t meet his requirements, Chelsea will also miss out on Gavi as a consequence.

The news will come as a relief to Barca fans, but still doesn’t mean that Gavi won’t be tempted by other big names that could emerge in the race to sign him, and who have been linked to him before, such as Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

On Sunday, Gavi is set to start for Barca in an important La Liga meeting with Atletico Madrid where their points lead at the summit could be extended to 11 or stay at a concerning eight in light of Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo.
