David Guetta seems to have found a formula that works for him when it comes to scoring new hits on the Billboard charts, and he’s sticking with it.
The French DJ, producer and songwriter earns another exciting win on two of Billboard’s dance and electronic rankings with his latest single, “Baby Don’t Hurt Me.” The tune is a reworking of Haddaway’s 1993 Euro-house classic “What Is Love,” only this time he has only grabbed part of that original cut and brought new talent to the part.
“Baby Don’t Hurt Me” features vocals from musicians Anne-Marie and Coi Leray, and they all collect a new hit with the collaboration. The tune debuts on Billboard’s multimetric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart at No. 8.
According to Luminate, the dance-pop cut, which has the potential to break out of just the dance/electronic charts, recorded 2.5 million streams, 1.4 million radio airplay impressions, and just 900 downloads purchased in the prior tracking week.
For Guetta, “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” stands as his twenty-first top 10 hit on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. With another win to his credit, he now ranks fourth among all artists in terms of the most appearances inside the highest tier since the chart was introduced back in January 2013. At present, the only acts who have accrued more top 10s on the tally are Kygo (24) and both Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers (22). At the rate he’s collecting new wins, it might not be long before he ties The Chainsmokers and/or Calvin Harris, and then maybe passes them.
“Baby Don’t Hurt Me” is the second top 10 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for Anne-Marie’s second top 10 hit, while Coi Leray appears inside the region for the first time.
The success of “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” is yet another feather in Guetta’s cap, whose prolific career has already seen him score a staggering 76 hits on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. That’s more than any other act in the ranking’s decade-long history. His closest competitor is Kygo, who has so far earned 62 placements.
“Baby Don’t Hurt Me” also debuts on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, arriving at number three with its 900 purchases.
Impressively, at the same time “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” opens inside the top 10 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, Guetta controls the ranking. His Bebe Rexha champion, “I’m Good (Blue)”–itself a reimagined version of another older dance-pop smash, Eiffel 65’s Eurodance earworm “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”– remains atop the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a thirtieth week. That’s one of the longest runs atop the list ever.
