One Killed And Five Injured After Four-Story Parking Lot Collapses In New York City

Topline

One person was killed and five others were injured Tuesday after a multi-story parking lot collapsed in New York City, the exact cause of which remains unclear, although officials noted the building had some open violations dating back to 2003 which they had filed to remedy in 2010.

Key Facts

New York Fire Department Chief John Esposito told the press that four people injured in the collapse have been hospitalized and are in stable condition, while a fifth person refused medical help.

The identity of the deceased individual has not yet been made public.

The building in question was a four-story parking garage located in Lower Manhattan, which pancaked and “collapsed all the way to the cellar floor,” the city’s acting Buildings Commissioner Kazimir Vilenchik said.

Firefighters initially entered the building to conduct searches, but they were removed and replaced by drones and the FDNY’s robotics units as portions of the building were continuing to collapse.

Esposito said he believes all the people present in the building at the time of the collapse have been accounted for.

Crucial Quote

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was present at the site following the collapse, tweeted: “While we are grateful for the amazing work of our first responders, including the innovative technology they used as part of rescue efforts, the work won’t end tonight. An investigation into how this happened is under way. We will get answers.”
