Last week, BTS superstar Jimin made history on the Hot 100 chart with his single “Like Crazy.” Unfortunately, this week, he has also set another record with the same tune on the same list…but this time around, it’s not one worth celebrating.
In its second week on the Hot 100, “Like Crazy” drops from No. 1 to No. 45, which now stands as the largest fall from the top spot in the chart’s half-century-long history. Before “Like Crazy,” no other song had ever fallen from the top spot to outside the top 40 the following week.
This record was previously held by Taylor Swift, whose single “Willow” debuted at No.1 on the Hot 100 in December 2020. It then dropped to No. 38 the following week, marking the largest descent from the top spot until Jimin’s record-breaking fall this week.
At that time, Swift beat out her predecessor in this specific showing by a narrow margin. In July 2020, the collaborative cut “Trollz” by 6ix9ine and Nicki Minaj dropped from No. 1 to No. 34, marking a 33-space decline.
The primary reason for the huge drop in Jimin’s single’s ranking appears to be its significant decline in sales. In its debut week, the song sold 241,000 copies, which remains the largest sales sum of 2023 in the United States. That figure alone was enough to push the single to the top of the Hot 100. Despite the chart incorporating streams and radio play in addition to sales, the tune didn’t overperform on streaming platforms and earned very little attention at radio, but at the time, it didn’t matter.
In its second week, “Like Crazy” didn’t perform nearly as well in any metric, resulting in the significant fall in its chart position. According to Luminate, “Like Crazy” sold just under 15,000 copies in the past tracking week. Although this figure is still enough to keep it at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, it was paired with low streams and little to no radio play, which is likely why the single slipped so far on the Hot 100.
