This ‘Super Mario Bros Movie’ Hot Sauce Is Actually Really Delicious

To celebrate the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, hot sauce maker TRUFF partnered with Illumination, Universal Pictures and Nintendo to release a special Mario-themed hot sauce pack with three different flavors and bottles featuring Mario, Toad and Princess Peach. Sorry, but Luigi is in a different castle.

The match is actually kind of perfect. TRUFF hot sauce is made with truffles, after all. In an ironic twist of fate, Mario doesn’t really like mushrooms in the movie, but I get the feeling he might like this hot sauce. Truffles have a very distinct flavor, but it’s nothing like the types of mushrooms people normally eat.

If you like truffles and hot sauce, you’ll love TRUFF. I had seen it in stores before, but hadn’t ever tried some until I received this Mario pack for review. It’s an instant hit with me and with my kids. You have three varieties to choose from in pack:

  • Toad is pictured on the blue bottle of Original Hot Sauce, “an intricate blend of ripe red chili peppers, real black truffle, agave nectar, and savory spices.”
  • Mario is on the red Hotter Hot Sauce bottle, “a jalapeño rich blend of red chili peppers, black truffle, agave nectar, and red habanero powder” that is very spicy. Seriously, a little goes a long way so be careful before dousing your breakfast burrito in this stuff.
  • Peach gets the orange bottle of White Truffle Hot Sauce, “a blend of ripe red chili peppers infused with white truffle and agave nectar” that’s sprinkled with coriander and has a nice smooth, very truffly flavor.

Truffles and spice. A pretty excellent combination if you’re a foodie. I live in the Southwest, so I put hot sauce on pretty much everything (okay, not everything, but it’s a pretty big part of our cuisine). I also love the earthy, overwhelming flavor of truffles, which I first fell in love with when we made this excellent burrata-truffle risotto many years ago that still lingers in my memory to this day. I have truffle powder and truffle-infused olive oil standing by at all times, but I hadn’t ever really thought about what a good hot sauce it could make.

The pack itself is fun, with really high-quality glass bottles and fun, geometric lids. I know that these are the same basic lids that normal TRUFF comes in, but the colorfulness of them makes me think of Toad and the Mushroom Kingdom.

In any case, I definitely recommend picking these up as a fun gift idea for your Nintendo hot sauce loving friends or family, or just to add to your own kitchen and/or collection. If you can find them. It appears this batch has already sold out. Of course, you can pick up the non-Mario branded hot sauces on Amazon, at Whole Foods and at the TRUFF website.
