Jimin Is Just The Second Korean Musical Act To Hit No. 1 On The Hot 100, Joining BTS

Jimin, one of the seven members of the K-pop group BTS, makes history this week by securing the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 with his single “Like Crazy.” Billboard announced his feat, and it’s worth noting that it’s something only one other act from South Korean has managed in the history of the Billboard charts.

As “Like Crazy” debuts atop the tally, it also makes Jimin the only soloist from South Korea to achieve this in the United States.

Before Jimin, the only other South Korean musical act to chart a No. 1 song in America was none other than BTS. While they’re no longer alone in conquering the list, they do remain the only ones to have done so several times. The band is currently on hiatus while some members fulfill their mandatory military service, leaving the others to complete work on their own.

“Like Crazy” marks the seventh No. 1 Hot 100 smash by a South Korean musical act through the ranking’s decades-long tenure, with the other six coming from BTS. The first of these was “Dynamite,” which debuted in first place in June 2020 and went on to become one of the biggest hits of that year.

Before 2020 was over, BTS had tripled their total number of Hot 100 rulers. They returned to the peak position alongside producer Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo a few months after “Dynamite” with the remix of the viral song “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat).” In December of the same year, BTS debuted their slower track “Life Goes On” at No. 1 on the Hot 100, closing out 2020 with a third winner.

Amazingly, the band accomplished the same number of Hot 100 champions in 2021. The septet’s single “Butter” replicated the success of “Dynamite” before it, easily opening in first place with a massive sales figure. Just one month after “Butter” started in first place, it was replaced by “Permission to Dance.” Shortly before 2022 began, BTS and Coldplay collaborated on “My Universe,” which also launched ahead of every other tune in America.
