“Grey’s Anatomy” Renewed For Season 20 On ABC

Prior to Grey’s Anatomy, which debuted on ABC on March 27, 2005, NBC’s ER was the longest-running medical drama in television history. On Friday, the alphabet net announced a renewal for a landmark 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy. The news comes just weeks after the departure of original cast member Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey.

Executive producer Meg Marinis will replace Krista Vernoff as the showrunner of the upcoming 20th season.

Grey’s Anatomy, which surpassed 400 episodes last fall, will conclude the current season on May 18. The number of episodes ordered for the new season has not been confirmed.

Grey’s Anatomy remains the fourth longest-running network scripted drama on the air (both historically and at present) behind NBC’s Law & Order: SVU (now in season 24), parent Law & Order (season 22) and CBS’ NCIS (season 20). Prior to this current roster, classic western Gunsmoke (1955-75) held the title at 20 seasons.

Now confirmed for season 20, two original cast members of Grey’s Anatomy remain: Chandra Wilson as Melinda Bailey and James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber.

Spin-0ff Station 19, which is currently in season six, is still waiting word on an expected pick-up for the 2023-24 TV season. Private Practice, the first spin-off from Grey’s Anatomy, ran from 2007 to 2013.
