Kyle Mooney Set To Make Directing Debut With New A24 Comedy ‘Y2K’

A24 has announced the cast and crew for their newest film, Y2K. The studio, which recently swept at the Oscars with its films Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Whale, has announced that Kyle Mooney will direct their newest disaster comedy.

Y2K will also feature the acting talents of Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler and Julian Dennison. The ensemble cast also will feature Lachlan Watson, Mason Gooding, Tim Heidecker, Eduardo Franco, Miles Robbins, Alicia Silverstone, Fred Hechinger, Daniel Zolghadri and 5x Billboard Music Award-winner The Kid Laroi. Y2K, written by Evan Winter, is set on New Year’s Eve 1999 and follows two high school students as they crash a party hours before Y2K.

A24 will finance and handle the worldwide release, also producing alongside Winter, Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin, Jonah Hill of Strong Baby and Christopher Storer under his American Light & Fixture banner. Wētā Workshop will oversee the film’s design and practical effects.

Mooney is best known for his time on Saturday Night Live, where he was a cast member from 2013-2022. Mooney left SNL in May 2022 with fellow cast members Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, and Aidy Bryant. Mooney has also gained notoriety for co-writing and starring in the dramedy Brigsby Bear. He has also acted in films such as The Unicorn, the A24 comedy Never Goin’ Back, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Hello, My Name Is Doris. He is also set to appear in No Hard Feelings starring Jennifer Lawrence. Mooney is also a former Comedy Central series Nathan for You writer. Y2K will be Mooney’s directorial debut.

This isn’t the only big A24 news as of late. Earlier this week, the studio also announced its new film, Mother Mary. Mother Mary will star Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. The film is directed by David Lowery, who collaborated with the studio with The Green Knight and A Ghost Story. Mother Mary will also feature original songs from Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX.

A24 has several upcoming films being released this spring and summer, including Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up on April 7 starring Michelle Williams; Ari Aster’s horror-comedy Beau Is Afraid with Joaquin Phoenix on April 21; the dramedy You Hurt My Feelings on May 26; Celine Song’s romantic drama Past Lives on June 2; and the supernatural horror Talk to Me from Dany and Michael Philippou on July 28.
