‘Shadow And Bone’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show

While Shadow and Bone season 2 has performed decently well, debuting at #1 a week ago and holding it, that run is now over. Shadow and Bone has now been dethroned in Netflix’s top 10 list by Waco: American Apocalypse.

What is that, exactly? As you may be able to guess, it’s actually a limited documentary series about Waco, the infamous cult massacre that may or may not have been caused by the FBI (it probably was). The series is only three episodes for just over two hours of content in total, so it’s sort of just…a long movie rather than an actual TV series. But the show rocketing to #1 shows that there’s still a lot of interest in Waco thirty years later.

I am immediately reminded of the fictionalized miniseries, Waco, that starred Taylor Kitsch as David Koresh, that I thought was actually quite good. That aired on the Paramount Network, and I assume it’s on Paramount Plus somewhere now. Apparently it’s getting a sequel series, Waco: The Aftermath, which is debuting next month on Showtime? I had no idea. Not sure what that will be about, exactly.

As for Shadow and Bone, it remains to be seen if a week at #1 is good enough for Netflix to renew the show not just for season 3, but also to greenlit a Six of Crows spin-off show that is being worked on at the same time. Netflix has been notorious for cancelling YA fantasy series in the past, but Shadow and Bone lived to season 2, and it would likely just need one more season to finish its source material arc, making it a rare complete series on Netflix which has fast become a graveyard of unfinished projects. But we probably won’t know one way or another for a month, as this is usually how these things go.

As for the rest of the list, You season 4 part 2 is holding at #3, which may have underperformed a bit with its split season, if I had to guess. Outer Banks season 3, which was already renewed for season 4 ahead of release, a rarity, is #4, high placement even after weeks. Very strong performance there.

The Glory is at #5, which has actually been Netflix’s global #1 hit for a few weeks now, even if it’s not topping the charts in the US. The Korean revenge series has been airing in two parts with 16 episodes in total, a high count for a Netflix series. It is scoring extremely well among both critics and fans, and very well may be one of Netflix’s bigger sleeper hits this year. I think I’m going to check it out this weekend, actually.

My guess is Waco will be knocked down soon, given how short it is, and we’ll see what ends up replacing it.
