“Dancing With the Stars” will kick off season 32 with a new host who’s also an old favorite in the ballroom.
Just days after Tyra Banks announced she’s hanging up her dancing shoes, and heading “to the boardroom, baby,” after three seasons as emcee of the long-running, celebrity-packed competition, comes news that former “DWTS” pro and two-time champ Julianne Hough will rejoin the series.
The show’s official Twitter account revealed the casting news Monday, March 20, as well as the fact that Hough won’t be hosting alone.
Alfonso Ribeiro, the season 19 winner and Carlton Dance icon who joined the ballroom bash last season, will stay on and serve alongside Hough.
“We are so excited to welcome @juliannehough as co-host of #DWTS Season 32 along with @alfonso_ribeiro!” the tweet read.
Within minutes of the announcement, viewers chimed in about the hosting shakeup on social media, with Hough getting a mostly positive reception among “DWTS” devotees (and exiting host Banks getting a mostly good-riddance response).
“A true dancer that understands the ballroom,” one fan wrote of Hough. “Congrats!”
“Good. Now I can watch,” added another.
As for the new hire, 34-year-old Hough called it “an honor to be rejoining ‘Dancing With the Stars’” in a statement she gave exclusively to Variety Monday morning.
“The show holds such a special place in my heart from the many years and different roles I have had the privilege of being a part of,” she explained. “The incredible team that brings the ballroom to life every night has been my family for the past 17 years. I am so excited to reunite with Alfonso, Carrie Ann, Bruno, Derek, the unbelievably talented pros and the amazing cast on the dance floor. The energy is magnetic every time you step foot in to the ballroom and I can’t wait to feel it again — and of course to share it all with the absolute best and most loyal fans — for another exciting season.”
One member of the aforementioned “DWTS” team doesn’t just feel like family to Hough; he is family. Hough’s brother, six-time mirror ball trophy winner Derek Hough, serves as a judge on the show’s ranking panel.
Shortly after his sister’s new gig was announced, he gave her some typical sibling recognition on Instagram, writing, “Oh. I hear we have a new co-host. She has a weird last name, really hard to pronounce.”
“DWTS” streaming home, Disney Plus, has yet to announce a premiere date for season 32.
