Zinedine Zidane has an FC Barcelona star at the top of his shopping list if he becomes the new head coach of Paris Saint Germain, according to a report.
The Qatari-backed giants are currently mananged by Cristophe Galtier. But even though the Frenchman has PSG leading Ligue 1 by eight points, it has been said that he will be fired at the end of the season if PSG are again eliminated from the Champions League.
With Galtier’s men facing Bayern Munich in a last 16 second leg clash on Wednesday and already trailing 1-0, this is a likely prospect.
Attentions will then turn to trying to hire Zidane, who was previously holding out for the France job but was overlooked when the French Football Federation offered Didier Deschamps a fresh contract following their dramatic penalty shooutout loss to Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the World Cup final at Qatar 2022.
A legend at the Bernabeu home of Barca’s bitter rivals Real Madrid, Zidane would attempt to become a thorn in the Blaugrana’s side once more if becoming PSG head coach.
According to El Nacional, he will demand that the Parisians sign one of Xavi Hernandez’s star players in winger Ousmane Dembele.
After he renewed terms last year until 2024, Dembele’s new contract had a release clause included in it which the media claims is as low as €50 million ($52.7 million) – of which Dembele and his agent can allegedly pocked half – and that Barca attest is a higher €100 million ($105.4 million).
Both these amounts and anything between are pocket change for PSG, though. And while Dembele is said to be happy at Camp Nou under Xavi, who has made him one of the best widemen in the world, he may be tempted by the chance to play alongside Les Bleus teammate Kylian Mbappe.
Though they are mired in financial difficulties, Barca must convince Dembele to stay put this summer and then offer him a bumper new deal next year.
