Streaming giant Spotify is experimenting with NFTs. However, there’s no promise these “token-enabled playlists” will be a permanent feature.
Spotify is trialing a new feature known as “token-enabled playlists,” enabling NFT holders to connect their wallets and access curated music. The service is exclusively accessible to the Moonbirds, Fluf, Overlord, and Kingship token holders, and only through a unique link.
These “token-enabled” playlists are more commonly known as token-gated. A technique that restricts access to particular content depending on whether a user holds a particular token.
During the three-month testing period, the customized playlists will be routinely updated.
Spotify Has Not Committed to Keeping the Feature
Overlord confirmed on Twitter that the program is only available to Android users in specific countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. NFTX’s Apoorv Lathey shared a screenshot of KINGSHIP’s playlist on Spotify, highlighting how to access it step-by-step.
However, Spotify did not disclose its future plans for expanding the feature. Speaking to CoinDesk, Spotify said that it “routinely conducts a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience.”
“Some of those end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as important learnings,” the spokesperson said.
The streaming service, with over 489 million subscribers, has previously attempted to integrate NFTs into its platform. Last year, it allowed selected artists such as Steve Aoki and The Wombats to promote NFTs on their profiles.
A year ago, Spotify began advertising new roles related to Web3. This is likely one of the fruits of that hiring process.
