‘There Is No Wrong Team’

The 2023 NBA Draft is only about four months away now.

It’s set for June 22, and one NBA franchise will be irrevocably changed for the better on that date.

Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-5 French superstar who is the presumed No. 1 pick, will land with one team on that June day.

As of now, the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons all have a 14% chance at the No. 1 pick, per Tankathan.com.

The Charlotte Hornets are next at 12.5% followed by the Orlando Magic (10.5) and the Indiana Pacers (9.0).

While NBA Commissioner Adam Silver might prefer the Frenchman to land in a major market like New York or Los Angeles, Wembanyama says he has no preference.

“There is no wrong team,” Wembanyama told ESPN.com. “I am not worried; there is no bad organization. I never tell myself I don’t like to go there.”

Wembanyama says he’s not really following the plight of the NBA’s cellar dwellers who may or may not be tanking for him.

“Let’s just say I’ve been following along, but it’s easier to watch teams at the top of the standings,” Wembanyama said. “It’s a little hard to look down.”

One NBA agent who was recently in France to see Wembanyama play for his Metropolitans club believes he is on track for all-time greatness.

“If he’s not hurt, he’ll be the greatest player ever,” said the agent, who has multiple clients playing overseas and in the NBA.

Wembanyama, who turned 19 Jan. 4, is averaging 22.2 points and 9.5 rebounds .

The Frenchman says wherever he lands, he plans to bring a winning mentality.

“The only thing I can tell you is I love winning, and I hate losing. I want to build something that eventually is going to be remembered,” Wembanyama said. “But it’s more about building every day, adding a little piece to the building every day.”

LeBron James sat courtside earlier this season to watch Wembanyama play against Scoot Henderson, the projected No. 2 pick, and G League Ignite in Las Vegas.

“The most important thing [for him] is stay true to the game,” James said, per ESPN “And that’s one thing for me. I always tell myself, ‘I’m going to commit to the game. I’m going to train. I’m going to prepare myself physically, mentally, spiritually, to give to the game if you want to be great.'”
