Topline
At least one person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting during a parade on Sunday night in the lead up to Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans , the latest in a series of mass shootings that have taken place across the country since the start of 2023.
Key Facts
The suspected shooter was taken into custody by the police who also recovered two guns at the scene, New Orleans Police Department Chief Deputy Hans Ganthier told the press.
Without revealing the identity of the victims, Ganthier said “three males and two females” were injured in the shooting, with one of them later being declared dead.
The other four people—one of whom is a child—are now in stable condition and being treated at a nearby hospital.
The shooting took place along the route of the Krewe of Bacchus parade, a popular event held on the Sunday before Mardi Gras.
Ganthier said police are still investigating if there was just one shooter or if more were involved.
What To Watch For
Mardi Gras is set to begin on Tuesday with approximately one million people visiting New Orleans for the festival. It is unclear if this shooting will lead to additional security measures for the event.
Big Number
79. That’s how many mass shootings have been reported across the country since the start of this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The nonprofit research group defines mass shootings as incidents where four or more people were killed or injured, not including the shooter.
