Today’s Wordle #598 Hint, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, February 7th

AI is all the rage these days. There’s a whole ‘arms race’ over the next phase of AI art and AI writing, with big companies like Google entering the fray as ChatGPT starts is bloody industry disruption. The future of everything hangs in the balance. As a writer, I suppose I should be worried. Then again, ChatGPT’s output—however remarkable—is soulless and dead-eyed. If writing is a color spectrum, ChatGPT is decidedly beige. I asked it to explain what Wordle is today and here’s what it came up with:

Wordle is a word puzzle game in which players try to guess a five letter word by guessing letters and receiving feedback on which letters are correct and in the correct position. The goal is to guess the word before the player runs out of attempts. Each correct letter in the correct position earns the player points, and incorrect letters subtract points. The game is won by either guessing the word correctly or by running out of attempts.

This is . . . curious. I wasn’t aware you earned or lost points in Wordle! How interesting. I mean, sure, I have created my own homebrew rules in order to compete against Wordle Bot in an unholy battle to the death but that’s not part of the game itself. Where is ChatGPT getting this information? Let’s try another.

Here’s what I got when I asked Wordle Bot to explain the plot of HBO’s The Last Of Us TV show:

The plot of “The Last of Us” TV show, which is based on the video game of the same name, is set 20 years after a pandemic has devastated the world and turned most of humanity into infected monsters. The story follows Joel, a hardened survivor, as he is tasked with escorting Ellie, a teenage girl who may hold the key to finding a cure, across a post-apocalyptic America. Along the way, they face hostile human and infected enemies, navigate through dangerous environments, and form a deep bond as they try to survive in this new world.

Well now, that’s much better! Still rather beige, but accurate and succinct.

Well, well, well now. I’m not really sure what to think of my guessing game today. Was it luck? Was it inspiration? Was it . . . magic?

My opening guess was derived directly from the video game I’ve just started playing: The wonderful Hogwarts Legacy Harry Potter RPG set 100 years before the events of the books. I’m loving it so far! It’s exceeding all my expectations!

In any case, magic was not such a magical starting word today, leaving me with a whopping 354 remaining guesses. But the magic didn’t stop there, as I went and guessed an almost-perfect second guess. Ample left me with just one very obvious remaining guess. And frankly, I’m not sure how I guessed this one so perfectly. I decided right away I wanted to try a word that started with ‘A’ and the first word I thought of was acute but the ‘C’ was taken so that was out. Then I thought abode but for some reason I thought maybe that had already been a Wordle answer (not sure about that, but my brain was telling me ‘NO!’ and for once, I listened).

So I settled on ample and was pleasantly surprised to get all but one letter in green. Apple was the only thing left for me to guess, so I plucked one from the tree, took a big juicy bite, and then chopped the tree down. Just kidding! I did, however, beat Wordle Bot by one today. For those counting that’s 1 point for guessing in three and another point for beating the Bot for a grand total of 2 huzzahs. Huzzah! Huzzah!
