Pedro Pascal hosted SNL this past weekend and much ado has been made of his appearance. The sketch that’s making the rounds is a wonderful spoof of HBO’s The Last Of Us, in which Pascal plays Mario in a dark-and-gritty HBO-style Mario Kart adventure. It’s super clever and very funny—Saturday Night Live at the top of their game. Watch it right here.
However, as clever as the Mario sketch is, another of Pascal’s skits made me laugh even harder. That, you may have guessed by now, is the above video titled ‘Wing Pit.’ The sketch is just a commercial for chicken wings. It starts out pretty normal. The exact sort of thing you’d expect from an ad geared toward Super Bowl fans gearing up for the Big Game.
Then it starts to get weird. Then it gets totally unhinged. Next thing you know we’re learning more than we ever thought we would about the chicken god of death. It’s absolutely hysterical. If you ever wondered what a watering trough filled with thousands of chicken wings looks like, or whether it would pair nicely with a kiddie pool full of ranch, this is the sketch for you.
Seriously, they should play this during next weekend’s Super Bowl. It would easily compete for funniest commercial—though the Super Bowl ads have been increasingly terrible for years now. It’s almost as though marketing professionals have lost their sense of humor. The worst are the ‘we care deeply about Issue XYZ’ ads from Chevy or whatever. Stop it. Just stop.
Speaking of Pedro Pascal and the Super Bowl, the next episode of The Last Of Us has actually been bumped up a few days to avoid competing for eyeballs. Meanwhile, the only ad I’m looking forward to during the Big Game is the Breaking Bad ad which sees Walter White, Jesse Pinkman and Tuco Salamanca reunite one last time.
