CES 2023 Las Vegas saw several companies display their innovative metaverse products. HTC, for one, showcased a headset that enables users to smell in a virtual environment. Touch sensations have a long distance to travel; however, it can still be achieved provided customers are willing to pay a higher cost.
The virtual headsets are scheduled for release later this year. Metaverse also called a three-dimensional virtual world, allows people to meet each other and expand their social network. CES 2023 was a four-day event that brought together companies who have been working in the segment, with a probable launch in 2023.
OVR Technology displayed a headset that brings eight aromas, which, when combined, can produce several different scents. It has been said that the objective is to bring calmness to the minds of their customers. This will be done with an experience of a spa blended with somewhat Instagram functionalities.
Aaron Wisniewski, the Chief Executive Officer & Founder of the company, has said that the metaverse industry is entering into the phase where it will drive the commerce, educational, and entertainment sectors. However, Wisniewski adds that the technology must appeal to the emotions of people to survive in the long run.
True to some extent, as medical experts have begun using the technology for complicated surgeries. Johns Hopkins, a neurosurgeon, said in 2021 that he performed spinal fusion surgery through the use of augmented reality.
Optimal technology by Lumus is already being used by fighter pilots, underwater welders, and surgeons to monitor the situation. It is believed that the widespread adoption of virtual reality will ultimately benefit the community. For instance, it will be easier to attend a meeting instead of just going to the office for a small duration. It will serve educational purposes as well, especially for young minds who will be able to revisit some historic places. However, at the same time, doubt remains regarding the extent of acceptability and adaptability of people with this newfound technology.
Meta and Microsoft are constantly investing millions of dollars in their metaverse department. Walmart and Nike are also taking up initiatives; however, there is less clarity as to how they will benefit from this.
Metaverse is estimated to generate $5 trillion by 2030, according to McKinsey. There is a huge question mark over this estimate, considering the fact that the metaverse has worked mostly in the gaming industry. Customers from other sectors are yet to show their inclination towards it. The cost aspect is already high. No matter the innovation related to senses like smell and touch, it looks difficult to reach out to a large number of customers.
Commercial aspects cannot be ignored, though, provided ventures set up an arm to reach companies that can actually use it for their customers. Interior designers have the inclination to showcase the designs to their customers, and so do car retailers. Nonetheless, any innovation in the direction of progress brings hope that the adoption will be present following the launch of metaverse products.
