I’m still having a bit of a hard time accepting the fact that it’s 2023 already. What happened to last year? It’s all a blur! Time flies, no doubt. The older I get, the faster it goes.
January is named after the Roman god Janus—the god of new beginnings and transitions. Originally, the Roman calendar didn’t include January or February. Instead, winter was a month-less span of days, with the months beginning in March.
The first four months originally were March (month of Mars), April (month of Aphrodite), May (month of Maia) and June (month of Juno). After that, each month was simply given a number. July used to be Quintilis—the fifth month—until Julius Caesar named it after himself. August was Sextilis—the sixth month—until Augustus Caesar claimed it. September, despite now being the ninth month, simply means the seventh month—October the 8th, November the 9th and December the 10th.
In Saxon languages, January was known as Wulf-monath, which means ‘wolf month’ and in Charlemagne’s empire, it was called Wintarmanoth, or ‘winter month.’ I rather like the Finnish word for it: tammikuu, which means ‘the heard of the winter’ and also ‘oak moon.’ The full moon that occurs in January is referred to as the wolf moon.
It’s all very wintry and chilly and dark, but lovely as well.
Alright, enough about the calendar. Let’s solve today’s Wordle!
Today’s Wordle Solution (spoilers!)
The Hint: Crazy hijinx.
The Clue: This Wordle begins with a vowel.
The Answer:
I’m not unhappy with these guesses despite the word taking four. At a certain point, there’s just not much you could have done to get there any quicker. My opening guess—crime—was a major success, reducing over 2,000 possible choices to just 32.
Alas, slain left me with two to choose from (though I wasn’t aware of that at the time). I didn’t panic but I did guess that word and unfortunately I was wrong. But even Wordle Bot said that panic is what he would have chosen in my shoes.
Of course, he got antic in just three today, roundly defeating your humble narrator. Damn bots! Ah well, there’s always tomorrow (for dreams to come true)….
