FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez spoke to the press on Friday before his team’s derby meeting with Espanyol in La Liga on New Year’s eve.
Reminded that he had a full squad at his disposal, Xavi said that his men are “motivated after a month and a half without competition, especially the staff”.
“We are leaders and we are excited to win La Liga. In addition, we know that Lewandowski can play, we have all the players available and now the problem is for the coach, who must manage this.
“Espanyol are very motivated on the day of the derby, they are working very well defensively and I think they have fewer points than they deserve,” Xavi added.
Asked if his captain Sergio Busquets will continue in Blaugrana after being linked to the Saudi club, Al-Nassr, that Cristiano Ronaldo has just joined, Xavi said: “It’s his decision”.
“For me he is very important, but it will depend on him. We will try to convince him [to stay].”
Xavi predicted a calm winter transfer market as he is happy “with all of” his players with whom “we are going to compete for the four titles”.
“I am delighted and happy. We only have Pique’s loss,” Xavi said. “I prefer that no one leave and if no one comes, I’m also happy. I’m very happy and with these [players] I hope to win titles.”
Asked about Ousmane Dembele, who lost the World Cup final in heartbreaking penalty shootout fashion to Argentina for France a fortnight ago, Xavi said his winger is “fine, content and happy”.
“I see him like this from the first day I’m here. It seems like a failure to lose the World Cup final as a starter… In another sport it would be silver. I am happy with the World Cup that Ousmane has played. He is at a very high level and for us he will continue to be fundamental. He’s going to be [as] ready as [Jules] Kounde,” Xavi concluded.
