New Shows, Movies And Netflix Originals

The year is almost over, and 2023 is fast-approaching. That means a new month of content from the world’s largest streaming service. A ton of movies—new and old—are headed to Netflix in January, 2023. I’ll go over the highlights before we get to the big list.

As always, on January 1st we get a bunch of old favorites like the 1999 buddy cop comedy Blue Streak, the 1994 Tom Hanks classic Forrest Gump and the excellent 2002 dystopian sci-fi Minority Report. If you’re a Rocky fan, the first five of the Sylvester Stallone films land on Netflix on the 1st. And if you need to catch up on your Top Gun before watching Top Gun: Maverick, that lands the first also. Resevoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino’s directorial debut, also lands on the 1st.

There are plenty of new Netflix Originals as well. Some highlights:

That 90s Show

We jump ahead a couple decades from That 70s Show to the 90s in That 90s Show. Debra Jo Rupp as Kitty Forman and Kurtwood Smith as Red Forman ass series regulars. Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama, and Tommy Chong all return as guest stars, alongside a new cast of teens. It looks very much like the same stoner sitcom as before, though now I feel old. That 70s Show took place between 1976 and 1979, and began airing in 1998. Well, it’s 2023 now, so the 90s are actually further in the past than the 70s were when That 70s Show came out. That’s hard to wrap my brain around.

The Pale Blue Eye

Christian Bale stars as a “world-weary detective is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.” This is a fictional story, so don’t expect to learn anything true about Edgar Allan Poe here, but it’s a pretty cool idea for a movie. The trailer looks pretty good!

Vikings: Valhalla Season 2

I’ll be honest: I think I was just tired of Vikings by the time Vikings: Valhalla hit Netflix. All the toasting to Lagertha and Ragnar in the first episode (of a show that takes place 100 years after the original series) had me rolling my eyes. There were other problems as well, but I didn’t get through the first season so I can’t really comment in depth. Should I finish? Was it worthwhile? I just wasn’t inspired to keep watching but here we are with Season 2 around the corner. Let me know on Twitter or Facebook what you think.
