A New York woman with a long rap sheet was arrested Monday for burglarizing the New York City rental home of famed actor Robert De Niro, who was at home during the break-in but unharmed, several news outlets reported Monday.

De Niro, 79, was present at a property on the Upper East Side during the incident but did not interact with the suspect, as he was on another floor, law enforcement sources told CNN, and sources told NBC New York his 10-year-old daughter was also present at the time.
Shanice Aviles, 30, was seen by officers entering a building on 65th Street through a basement at 2:45 a.m. and there were signs of forced entry, according to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department, who did not confirm the home was De Niro’s.
There were conflicting reports about what happened at the residence, with CNN reporting Aviles allegedly took Christmas presents and an iPad, while law enforcement officials told NBC New York that Aviles was simply caught using an iPad at the home.
Aviles was arrested at the property and charged with burglary, the NYPD told Forbes, and De Niro is expected to press charges, NBC New York reported.
Aviles was known to officers, as she is one of the top five burglars in the precinct, and has had over two dozen prior arrests, sources told CNN.
A representative for De Niro confirmed to the New York Times there was an attempted burglary at his rental home, but did not provide further comment.

As part of bail reform laws enacted in 2020 in New York, burglary became a non-bailable offense. In November 2022, burglary decreased 6% compared to the same month last year. Felony burglary recidivism for burglary in 2021 was 24%, according to CNN, citing NYPD statistics, up from 7% in 2017.
