Crypto: Trump changes his mind and launches his NFTs

Donald Trump, former president of the United States, is changing his mind about the crypto world and offering his NFT collection for sale. Indeed, the former president is selling digital trading cards for $99 that show him as a superhero, an astronaut and more.

Bitcoin Magazine tweets about Trump’s change of heart:

Indeed, although Trump seemed at first skeptical and averse to blockchain technology, with his collection of NFTs he has most likely changed his mind about Bitcoin being no more than a scam.

Collect Trump Cards: the crypto world in disbelief over new NFTs

Donald Trump yesterday launched a collection of NFT collectible cards that claim to offer real benefits for buyers, including an invitation to a gala dinner with Trump or even a meeting with the former US president. And, both NFT fans and Trump supporters are incredulous about the news.

On Thursday, Trump shared the Collect Trump Cards campaign via his official Truth Social account. In fact, the post states that the digital collectible cards, minted on Polygon, layer 2 of Ethereum, will be sold for $99 each and will participate in sweepstakes to win certain benefits.

Specifically, each card features an illustration of Trump, in some cases reinvented as a superhero, cowboy or astronaut. The former president left office somewhat in disgrace after encouraging the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, and, since then, he has faced investigations into his role in the events along with alleged fraud at his companies.

Trump’s collection includes 45,000 total NFTs on Polygon, with a limit per buyer of 100 NFTs. Just yesterday, Trump commented on his NFT collection, writing:

“Collect all of your favorite Trump Digital Trading Cards, very much like a baseball card, but hopefully much more exciting. GET YOUR CARDS NOW! Only $99 each! Would make a great Christmas gift. Don’t Wait. They will be gone, I believe, very quickly!”

Although there have been unofficial projects in the past, this is the first time Trump himself has published his own NFT collectibles. The social network Parler, for example, released Trump-inspired NFTs earlier this year.

Crypto Twitter reacts to Trump’s announcement

The backlash on Crypto Twitter following the news of Trump’s NFT collection was immediate, with NFT personalities reacting to what Trump promised was a “major announcement.”

For example, pseudonymous collector and NFT creator Punk6529 wrote:

“Is that an appropriate use of ‘I can’t even?’”

Instead, crypto trader and influencer Scott Melker reacted on Twitter by commenting:

Still, cryptocurrency investor LilMoonLambo, writes on Twitter about the news:

In addition, conservative voices also see the launch as a misfire. In fact, Robby Starbuck, a filmmaker and former Republican congressional candidate, commented on the news saying that he loves Trump, but adding that his NFT collection will anger many personalities.

Starbuck commented Trump’s decision with strong words:

Trump against crypto: they are a threat against the dollar

As anticipated, what has stirred up discussion in the Crypto Twitter community about the new NFTs is also Trump’s strange change of heart about the blockchain world.

In fact, some personalities did not miss the opportunity to emphasize Trump’s previously stated position against cryptocurrencies. His NFT cards are minted on a blockchain network and can be purchased with crypto, signifying a U-turn for the former president.

What Trump previously claimed was that crypto was a threat to the dollar and Bitcoin in particular was just a scam. Moreover, when he was in the White House Trump insisted that he would like the dollar to be the “currency of the world.”
