After avoiding significant injuries to key role players to start the season, the injury bug has finally come for the Dallas Mavericks. The team announced Thursday that forward Maxi Kleber suffered a tear of his right hamstring at practice on Tuesday, December 13.
Treatment options are currently being considered, and there is no timetable for Kleber’s return.
The average recovery time for a partially torn hamstring is four to eight weeks. However, if it is a complete tear, Kleber could miss up to three months. If his injury requires surgery, his recovery could take even longer.
Kleber’s injury is a massive blow for the Mavericks. Kleber, 30, is a defensive anchor in the frontcourt and can stretch the floor on defense. He is a staple off the bench, providing needed energy on both ends for Dallas’ second unit.
The German native has already missed six games this season, including Wednesday’s 105-90 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers—the first game since tearing his hamstring. This season, he is averaging 6.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, an assist and a block in 25.6 minutes per game.
Kleber is in the final year of a four-year, $35.6 million contract that he signed with Dallas in 2019. He will earn $9 million this season.
