Opera launches new Web3 security tools for crypto users

Cryptocurrency users can now browse the web more safely thanks to a new suite of security features that Opera, a leading Web3 browser, announced on Thursday.

According to Opera, the new browser features are part of its Web3 Guard and will help users add another security layer to their devices to protect against malicious actors.

Available in the Opera Crypto Browser, the tools include safeguards against suspicious websites, decentralised applications (dApps), and seed phrase phishing attacks.

Web3 Guard to help crypto users browse safely

Any crypto user can add to their protection through the Opera Crypto Browser, with the new Web3 Guard features seamlessly integrating to any Web2 website. The built-in Dapp Check tool, for instance, will scan for security risks such as suspicious or audited code, while the Seed Phrase Phishing Check tool will scan web pages for signs of potential phishing attacks.

Other benefits include enabling HTTPS everywhere, which means one can ensure the website they visit uses proper encryption protocols.

Danny Yao, Senior Product Manager at Opera noted in a press release:

“The current browsers most people use today are not built to handle the complexity of Web3… With this release, we make a big leap forward with dedicated security features that enable people to use Web3 applications in a safer way.”

Opera’s release of the additional crypto security tools come amid increased vulnerability of users to cyberattacks and fraud.

2022 has, for instance, seen over $4.3 billion lost to hackers across the crypto space. Indeed, data shows that crypto investors are losing millions of dollars’ worth of their crypto assets to 15 crypto scams every hour.

In October, Solidus Labs revealed that 12% of BEP-20 tokens (BNB Chain tokens) and 8% of all ERC-20 (Ethereum-based tokens) were scams. The crypto security platform noted that scammers had deployed more than 188,000 rug pulls across 12 major blockchains.
