What a pleasant surprise. 65 looks absolutely bonkers despite the not-great film title.
The number refers to the 65 million years back in time that Adam Driver’s character, Mills, finds himself after a catastrophic crash landing in his spaceship. He’s on earth but doesn’t know it, and finds himself stranded with just one other survivor: Koa (Ariana Greenblatt) a child who he now has to protect.
From dinosaurs.
This is very much Planet Of The Apes but with prehistoric monstrosities. And in true Jurassic Park / A Quiet Place fashion, the mission to protect a child amps up the tension tenfold. It’s no wonder that the writers of A Quiet Place, Scott Beck & Bryan Woods, are writing and directing this picture.
I’ve always thought A Quiet Place was a better Jurassic Park sequel than any of the Jurassic Park sequels so this is very fitting. Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi is among the film’s producers.
Here’s the trailer:
It’s remarkable that pretty much only Jurassic Park and its offspring have done big-budget dinosaur movies, but now we’ll finally get a new take on the genre. This looks good, too, stripping the story down to a small cast and a tight, contained story.
It’s also cool to see Driver return to sci-fi as someone other than Kylo Ren.
Chloe Coleman stars alongside Driver and Greenblatt. 65 hits theaters on March 10th, 2023.
