The Federal Highway Administration has seen fit to order New Jersey to cease putting up sassy messages on its 215 statewide message boards.
Among the state’s snarky admonitions:
“Get your head out of your apps”
“Hold on to your butts/help prevent forest fires”
Several other states are doing the same and will soon be in Washington’s crosshairs.
Why? As a Delaware transportation official put it: “You can only say ‘Buckle up’; ‘Don’t drink’; and ‘Slow down in work zones’ so many times.” With a different approach, the message will be remembered and talked about.
The message of this episode of What’s Ahead to the Federal Highway Administration is clear: Butt out.
