At least 22 cadets with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were injured when a driver plowed into a large group of cadets on a morning run Wednesday morning, according to local authorities, while the cause of the crash is under investigation.
A vehicle traveling the wrong way plowed into a group of cadets in South Whittier, California, southeast of Los Angeles, just before 6:30 a.m. local time, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Seven of the injured cadets are in critical condition, according to Los Angeles County Fire Battalion Chief Chad Sourbeer, speaking with Los Angeles ABC affiliate ABC 7 reported.
In a statement, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said victims were taken to local hospitals and the severity of their injuries is not yet known.
The driver, a 22-year-old whose name was not immediately disclosed, has since been detained for further investigation, the sheriff’s department stated.
The driver also suffered minor injuries after striking a streetlight pole, ABC 7 reported.
Although Sheriff Alex Villanueva confirmed the vehicle struck 10 cadets, the number of injured cadets could be higher—ABC 7 reported 21 recruits with the Sheriff’s Department were injured.
This is a developing story.
