There are few players with the goalscoring record of Harry Kane over the last decade. The 29-year-old has netted 259 times in just 403 games for Tottenham Hotspur and currently sits third in the list of all-time top scorers in Premier
Kane is also just two goals away from matching Wayne Rooney’s record tally of 53 goals for England. It’s entirely possible Kane could become his country’s all-time top scorer at the 2022 World Cup where the Three Lions are expected to be among the frontrunners to go all the way having enjoyed success at reject major tournaments.
Four years ago in Russia, Kane left the World Cup as the Golden Boot winner. That raised his reputation to an elite level with the 29-year-old considered one of the best centre forwards in the sport ever since. 2018 was a turning point in Kane’s career and 2022, entering 2023, could also be significant for him.
Recent reports claim Kane has postponed talks with Tottenham over a new contract until after the 2022 World Cup. It could be the case that the striker simply wants to eliminate all distractions to ensure England have their best chance of winning a World Cup for decades. Kane is their captain and top scorer.
However, it could also be argued that Kane is being cynical by making this decision. He knows the World Cup could lift his stock and maybe even broaden his options if another club makes an offer for him in January or next summer. Kane has previously demonstrated a willingness to leave Spurs and his head could be turned again.
Manchester City led the chase to sign Kane two summers ago with Pep Guardiola known to be an admirer of the England striker. City have since filled their number nine void with the signing of Erling Haaland, but Manchester United could be in the market for a new centre forward soon as Erik Ten Hag looks for the right frontman for his new-look team.
The stronger speculation around Kane concerns Bayern Munich who have been linked with the 29-year-old consistently over the last few months. Julian Nagelsmann and Oliver Kahn have been both asked about reports related to the Bavarians’ interest and while they have batted away those questions it is surely reasonable to suggest there is no smoke without fire.
Kane could be tempted by any offer that comes from Bayern Munich with the Bavarian club perennial German champions and Champions League contenders. It would be understandable if the 29-year-old wanted to take on a new challenge at this stage of his career and his form at the 2022 World Cup could determine what route he takes next.
