Virunga National Park, a 7,800 square kilometers park located east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been populated with primates. About 689 rangers are dedicated to safeguarding the Park’s wildlife, and the Virunga National Park relies on donations to support its operations. UNESCO added Virunga National Park to its World Heritage Site list in 1979.
Moreover, the management of Virunga National Park aims to responsibly harness the Park’s natural resources to create opportunities for the four million people that live within a day’s walk of its borders. The Park’s management, with a vision to economically transform the region – creating jobs and reducing poverty- is currently focused on four key areas: hydropower, sustainable agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
