Annually we observe how many stores are closing on Thanksgiving Day. It has always been our belief that Thanksgiving is a family day where a sumptuous turkey meal is enjoyed by the whole family. Stores opening in the late afternoon deprive employees from enjoying a family gathering.
Good Housekeeping surveyed retailers plans for the coming holidays. So far, 35 stores have announced that they will be closed. It includes Walmart

POSTSCRIPT: We applaud stores that are closed on Thanksgiving Day. They will probably open early on Black Friday. However, holiday sales started in early October, and it is likely that Black Friday has lost some of its urgency. Shoppers are generally advised to buy now, since it is unlikely that they will find a specific item or color close to the holidays. Last year, holiday sales rose 16%, however the forecast for this year is 4% to 7% according to Alix Partners. It is likely that the season will be very promotional.
