Sebastian Fundora Vs. Carlos Ocampo: Odds, Records, Prediction

Six months after the most impressive win of his career, Sebastian Fundora returns against another solid opponent that he should handle if he truly has eyes on eventually winning a junior middleweight world title. Though Carlos Ocampo probably isn’t quite as dangerous as Erickson Lubin, who knocked down Fundora during their fight in April before Fundora dispatched him in the ninth round, Ocampo still could present problems. Which makes Saturday night’s a potentially interesting one. Here’s everything you need to know about Sebastian Fundora vs. Carlos Ocampo, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win.

Although Fundora was the slight underdog against Lubin, he performed well. He had to take a knee in the seventh round after a Lubin onslaught, but Fundora proved that he’s a hellacious inside fighter (despite his 6-foot-6 height) that and he’s strong enough to take out a B-level fighter like Lubin. Now, he’ll see if he can do it against Ocampo (who is still probably a slight step down from Lubin).

“I showed the fans what I was made of in my last fight,” Fundora said. “It wasn’t really what I learned. My goal was to display myself and what I’m capable of for the fans. I really wanted to show who I am in this division. I’m serious about becoming world champion.”

Performances like this show that he certainly has that potential (and maybe even the potential at some point to land himself on the pound for pound list).

But Ocampo has a solid resume of his own. His only slip-up? A first-round knockout loss to Errol Spence in 2018.

“I made a rookie mistake in the Spence fight,” Ocampo said. “I got careless at the end of the first round, and I promise that it won’t happen again. I’m moving forward, but I’ve become a better fighter because of it.

But is Ocampo good enough to compete with Fundora? The oddsmakers might not think so, but Ocampo certainly does.

“I want to show people that I’m hungrier than ever,” Ocampo said. “I’m here to win the title and I’m going after it with all my might. I want to grab that title and bring it back home to Mexico where it belongs.”

Here’s more info on the Sebastian Fundora vs. Carlos Ocampo showdown that U.S. viewers can watch on Showtime beginning at 10 p.m. ET.

Sebastian Fundora vs. Carlos Ocampo odds

Fundora is a big betting favorite at -900 (bet $900 to win $100), and so, there’s not much sense in betting his money line (I don’t even love him at -225 to win by KO/TKO). Ocampo is the +550 underdog (win $550 on a $100 wager), and if you like him to win, that’s not a bad value. To make any money on Fundora, you might have to take him to win by stoppage in rounds 4-6 or 7-9, both of which are +300.

Sebastian Fundora vs. Carlos Ocampo records

Fundora is a rising star with a 19-0-1 (13 KOs) record, and he’s coming off his most impressive win. In the two fights before that, Fundora had to battle with the technically sound Sergio Garcia and the solid veteran Jorge Cota and passed both of those tests. Ocampo is solid, but if Fundora wants to go for a title, he’d have to face undisputed champion Jermell Charlo, and that’s simply a level of fighter that Fundora has never faced before.

In his most high-profile bout, Ocampo (34-1, 22 KOs) was stopped in the first round by an Errol Spence body shot in 2018. Since then, though, Ocampo has won 12 straight. Mostly, it’s been against nondescript opponents, so I’m not sure how much that tells us, if anything, about Ocampo’s chances against Fundora. Ocampo’s biggest win likely came in 2015 vs. Jorge Paez Jr., but it was long after Paez’s prime.

Sebastian Fundora vs. Carlos Ocampo prediction

There’s always a chance Fundora could either be taking Ocampo lightly or be susceptible to a letdown after the Lubin fight. But even if Fundora isn’t at his best, I still like him to win. In fact, I like him to stop Ocampo with his pressure and his power. Say, Fundora by stoppage in the eighth round.
