There are plenty of mysteries in life. What happened to the boyfriend you were once fond of? Do aliens exist? And do those two mysteries have anything to do with each other?
The main character in the 10-episode sci-fi k-comedy Glitch is Hong Ji-hyo, a woman who likes to reaffirm the fact that she is rational and sensible. Ji-hyo, played by Jeon Yeo-bin, needs to keep repeating that to herself because she can’t trust what she sees. Her life seems fine to most people, because they don’t know about her occasional paranormal experiences, which include random alien sightings and mysterious messages on various forms of media. She doesn’t dare tell people what she’s experiencing.
Still, when her ex-boyfriend, played by Lee Dong-hwi, disappears suddenly the answer seems obvious. Aliens might have something to do with it. But who can she get to help her find him? She can’t admit to the police that she sees little—and sometimes big—green men that resemble walking E.T. posters.
Because it’s hard to find help, she goes to a UFO club for advice. This UFO club is very quirky, even for a UFO club, and their activities include playing games and napping during UFO documentaries. There she meets Huh Bo-ra, played winningly by Nana. Bo-ra and Ji-hyo have some history, so Bo-ra might take her worries seriously.
The aliens that appear in Glitch are hardly convincing as life forms, but that might matter less than what they symbolize to Ji-hyo, what they might be trying to tell her or, perhaps, what she is trying to figure out about her own life.
Jeon recently played a persuasive attorney in the hit mob drama Vincenzo and this year will appear in another drama, Into Your Time. Lee was last seen in Pegasus Market and will soon star in Casino. Nana starred in the drama Oh! Master and appears in the film Confession.
Glitch is written by Jin Han-sae.
