Last week, the highest two spaces on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart were filled by debuts. This time around, the track that had to settle for second place moves up to the summit, and in doing so, one of the artists credited makes specific history on the list.
Crush and J-Hope’s “Rush Hour” advances from No. 2 to No. 1 on this week’s World Digital Song Sales chart, which ranks the bestselling tunes that the company classifies as “world,” which is a vague definition that often includes artists performing in Korean, Japanese, German, and various African languages.
“Rush Hour” is Crush’s first No. 1 on the World Digital Song Sales chart, but the same can’t be said for J-Hope. In fact, with another leader to his credit, the singer-songwriter ties another one of the biggest names from his home country for a piece of history.
J-Hope has now landed five No. 1 singles on the World Digital Song Sales chart under his solo moniker. Now that he’s collected his fifth, he’s tied with Psy for the most champions among South Korean soloists in the ranking’s years-long tenure. The two stars have managed a quintet of winners, and as they have both added to their sums this year, it’s clear they aren’t done yet.
J-Hope earned his first No. 1 smash on the World Digital Song Sales chart on his own in 2018 with his track “Daydream.” It was a major milestone when he appeared atop the tally, as it wasn’t common for soloists to conquer the list at the time, though it happens more frequently these days. He doubled his career total the following year with “Chicken Noodle Soup,” a collaboration with Becky G.
2022 has turned out to be huge for J-Hope on the World Digital Song Sales chart, as he’s risen to the peak position with three different cuts. In July, he collected two more winners from his latest solo offering Jack in the Box, as both “More” and “Arson” bolted to the throne.
For his part, Psy’s singles “Gangnam Style,” “Gentleman,” “Hangover” with Snoop Dogg, “Daddy” and CL, and most recently, “That That” with Suga have all made their way to No. 1 on the World Digital Song Sales chart. Psy was the first South Korean solo artist to rack up five leaders, but now he’s no longer alone in this feat.
Coming in not too far behind both J-Hope and Psy with three No. 1s apiece on the World Digital Song Sales chart are both RM and Suga, also of BTS fame. As a member of the seven-piece K-pop vocal band, J-Hope has also earned a record-setting 32 rulers, bringing his total to 37 leaders.
