Topline
Harry Styles’ single “As It Was” remained atop the Billboard Hot 100 for a record-breaking 15th week, after his movie Don’t Worry Darling debuted at the head of the box office last weekend, a clear show of Styles’ cultural dominance.
Key Facts
Styles is now the only soloist to spend at least 15 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, which measures sales, streams and radio airplay—”Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber and “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men each had 16 weeks and “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus had 19.
With this week’s data, Styles has topped superstars like Whitney Houston, Bruno Mars, the Black Eyed Peas and Elton John, who all had tracks that spent 14 weeks at No. 1.
Meanwhile, the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling—which co-stars Styles—led the domestic box office with a $19.2 million opening over the weekend.
Styles recently finished a 15-show sold-out run at Madison Square Garden of his Love On Tour concert, and became only the third artist in history to receive a banner at the famed New York venue, alongside Billy Joel and Phish, which they received for residencies and sold-out shows as well.
Key Background
No star has had as successful a year as Styles. With his expansion into the big screen, the release of his third solo album Harry’s House in April and the viral obsession over Love On Tour, 2022 belongs to the 28-year-old One Direction alumnus. Harry’s House debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while “As It Was”—its lead single—has spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other song this year and was deemed the Song Of the Summer by Billboard and Spotify, based on its commercial success. In Don’t Worry Darling, Styles stars alongside Florence Pugh, his largest acting role to date, which has garnered mixed reviews from critics. He also stars in the upcoming film My Policeman, which opens on October 21. In addition to his entertainment industry success, Styles launched Pleasing, his gender-neutral beauty line, in November of last year. And in June, he announced a collaboration with Gucci.
Tangent
K-pop group BLACKPINK’s album Born Pink debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with 102,000 equivalent album units, becoming the first all-female group to hold the spot since Danity Kane in 2008. Born Pink is BLACKPINK’s second studio album. The group’s first, The Album, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard chart. It knocked down Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti, which has spent nine weeks at No. 1, more than any other album this year.
