It might have taken longer than they had anticipated over the summer months, but Manchester United’s signing of Christian Eriksen has been a masterstroke.
The Red Devils’ pursuit of the Denmark international was publicly known throughout the summer, with previous history of interest in him being known since his time at Tottenham Hotspur. Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman, stood strong and would not sell to Man United, and instead managed to agree a deal with Inter Milan.
Two years have passed since then and Eriksen remains one of the best players in the Premier
In Eriksen’s opening eight games for Erik Ten Hag he has showcased his natural ability to find space and dictate play. While the first two games of the Premier League season – against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford – ended up in defeats, since then, Manchester United have been on a fantastic run of form.
The Red Devils have won their past four Premier League games and won against FC Sheriff in the Europa League away from home. Their only defeat and dropped points came at home to Real Sociedad, where they admittedly looked poor in a much-changed team.
Eriksen has been featured in Ten Hag’s system as a deep-lying playmaker more often than not, where he is suited to taking the ball off the defence and immediately looking for space and opportunities in front of him. It feels that Manchester United have longed for a midfielder to do something as simple as that for years, which makes it even sweeter for the fans to see it in action now.
The Danish maestro pulled the strings against Arsenal in the Premier League earlier this month and was pivotal to the goals scored, as well as directly assisting Marcus Rashford for his second and Manchester United’s third.
With what Eriksen has been through in the past 12 months, it is utterly extraordinary to see him playing at the level he is on a consistent basis. Not only has he been Manchester United’s best signing for several years, he has been their best performer this season.
Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia have, too, adapted quickly to the Premier League and its demands, contributing to the team’s success so far, but Eriksen’s marauding and game-defining performances have been a set above.
Manchester United must continue to back Ten Hag and his judgement when it comes to who he wants for his system moving forward. This is just the beginning for the Dutch manager at the club with steps in the right direction being made.
More is to come, but from what Manchester United fans have been let in to see so far, there is an overwhelming sense of approval from the faithful.
