A Look At Some Of The Earnings Coming The Week Of August 29

Over the next few days, anticipated earnings reports will span a spectrum that run the spectrum from tech giant Hewlett-PackardHPQ
HPQ
to Signet JewelersSIG
SIG
. Recall, many companies and industries continue to grapple with factors like supply chain woes, inflation-related pressure, and inventory overloads, making the story even more interesting as their earnings reports roll out. While it’s impossible to pinpoint who the winners and bright spots will be, here are some names I’ll be watching with great interest this week.

Five Below-Reporting Tuesday After Markets Close

Why: Discounters made the Winner’s Circle and enjoyed a fantastic ride last week after Dollar GeneralDG
DG
and Dollar TreDLTR
eDLTR
reported strong results thanks in part to new consumer demographics as more of us strive to offset financial pressure related to inflation. The inflation story is one that continues to pique both interest and wallets as more consumers look for ways to stretch their dollar, and the affluent demographic, while not surprising, is an added layer that makes the discounter story a compelling one to follow a tad closer. It’s also too soon to call it completely, but there is a chance that back-to-school shopping could also be a boon if early results (or even whispers of them) can be given when they weigh in.

My Question: Is the discounter enthusiasm limited to last week’s winners or has it expanded to include these two as well?

Calavo Growers-Reporting Thursday After Markets Close

Why: As major purveyors and processors of a great deal of consumer foodstuffs, this trifecta will weigh in Thursday to share the good, bad, and indifferent when it comes to our soups, meats, and avocado toast. Recall, a few weeks back, we took a quick look at the restaurant vs. supermarket debate consumers have had to wage when considering their spending habits, which made us wonder just how “extra” guac has been of late. Earlier this year, the USDA reported that because of food inflation, consumers could expect to see food prices spike anywhere from 8.5% to 9.5%.

My Question: Is it true that more of us are cooking at home as costs for everything continue to go up and how much are we saving at home vs. eating out?

-Reporting Tuesday Before Markets Open

Why: In keeping with this year’s chip shortage story, electronics retailers like Best Buy should have some fantastic light to shed on the supply and demand story here as well as hints that pertain to back-to-school spending on items found at places like it.

My Question: Is the electronics sector stepping out of the chip shortage weeds yet, and if so, will Best Buy be a leader ushering in the next phase?

Build-A-Bear-Workshop-Reporting Thursday Before Markets Open

Why: At first glimpse, a DIY stuffed animal outfitter might seem like child’s play, but it’s anything but when it comes to the company’s strength. It most recently reported both an earnings and revenue beat and on the company call, CEO Sharon John remarked, “We believe that our sustained profitable growth is largely the result of a multi-faceted, multi-year strategic plan that we have been successfully executing while navigating a highly volatile environment.”

My Question: Just how many bears got built this past quarter?
