What Is Hollywood’s Influence On A Record-Breaking Period In 2021 For Plastic Surgery

Hollywood and the entertainment industry at large have always had a reputation for its artists, talent and executives being very familiar with the plastic surgery industry. With a record-breaking first half of 2021, with Americans spending over $8.7 billion on aesthetic plastic surgery, according to data from Aesthetic Society members using the Aesthetic Neural Network (ANN) data, powered by Ronan Solutions. I take a look at Hollywood’s impact on the burgeoning sector.

Trends have historically come out of what we see across media and society. A silent social pressure that is exasperated when we watch content or consume media. As identified there has been a massive push in the aesthetic surgery sector with record-breaking revenues.

“2021 was a unique year for our specialty given the COVID-19 pandemic and adjusting to the various changes it caused,” says William P. Adams, Jr., MD, President of The Aesthetic Society.

“Demand is stronger than ever and likely won’t let up in the new year. Still, our members are an elite group using the safest, most advanced techniques. 2022 will give our membership even more opportunity to provide the safest care to the growing patient population.”

Interestingly there’s also a body positive push from Hollywood simultaneously that is – whether deliberately or not – working against aesthetic enhancements. With Jane Fonda as an example, in a recent interview with Vogue, she highlighted that she was “not proud” of having a facelift and at the time she was concerned if she continued doing procedures she might look “distorted”.

“I don’t do a lot of facials. I don’t spend a lot of money on face creams or anything like that, but I stay moisturized, I sleep, I move, I stay out of the sun, and I have good friends who make me laugh,” Fonda said. “Laughter is a good thing, too.”

Numerous female celebrities have also come out in recent years against enhancements after most had tried one or another. Nicole Kidman, Courteney Cox, Salma Hayek, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Pink, and Jamie Lee Curtis amongst others.

Halle Berry admitted to feeling pressurized to receive plastic surgery in a 2015 Yahoo! Beauty interview.

“I won’t lie and tell you that those things don’t cross my mind, because somebody is always suggesting it to me,” she said.

“You know if you just did a little bit of this and that, lift this up, then this would be a little bit better. It’s almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. That’s what I feel like.”

Added Berry, “‘When you see everybody around you doing it, you have those moments when you think, ‘To stay alive in this business, do I need to do the same thing?’”

“Aging is natural, and that’s going to happen to all of us,” she said. “I just want to always look like myself, even if that’s an older version of myself. I think when you do too much of that cosmetic stuff, you become somebody else in a way.”

I’m a clinician with nearly 20 years of experience in pediatric and adult neurosurgery who still takes trauma calls at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. I treat my aesthetic patients ethically without giving them a complex. I will be quick to turn patients away if I feel they don’t need anything. That is the opposite of what most injectors/clinicians do.”

She continued, “It’s important as an industry we recognize this and consistently apply best practices regardless of monetary gain.”
