Topline
A Facebook glitch appeared to affect a number of users early on Wednesday who complained of their news feeds being bombarded with posts made by random individuals tagging celebrity accounts, prompting some users to ask if the platform had been hacked.
Key Facts
Multiple users took to Twitter and other social platforms sharing images showing their feeds being filled with posts made by people not on their friends list that targeted celebrity accounts like Robert Downing Jr, Tom Cruise, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and many others.
The timelines appeared to be throwing up the most recent posts made on celebrity accounts, most of which appear to be from fans of the same celebrities.
It is unclear if the issue has resolved itself but Forbes was unable to replicate the issue on both the desktop browser version of the website and the mobile app on iPhone and Android.
The website DownDetector shows a surge in complaints about Facebook having problems early on Wednesday, but those appear to have subsided.
In a statement shared with Forbes, Facebook’s parent Meta said it was aware that “some people are having trouble with their Facebook Feed,” and were working to restore things to normal.
This is a developing story.
