For not being in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project yet, Alison Brie has a complicated relationship with Marvel Studios, and it’s certainly not her fault. Both fans of hers and of the MCU have expressed a strong desire for her to join in on the superhero fun.
First, a rumor began floating around Twitter in early 2020 that Marvel Studios was looking for an “Alison Brie-type” to play She-Hulk in the Disney+ series of the same name, now premiering this Friday. Brie had fun with the rumors on The Late Late Show and the role eventually went to Tatiana Maslany.
On Monday, while promoting her film Spin Me Round, which screened at the Cinequest Film Festival, Alison told me she hasn’t had any discussions with Marvel Studios since the She-Hulk rumors began floating around.
“No, no more talk as far as I know,” Brie said via Zoom video when asked if there’s been any conversations with the studio about her joining the MCU. “But I will be tuning into She-Hulk, can’t wait to see it.”
In 2018, EW reported that Alison said she had auditioned for several Marvel movies at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas.
While doing another interview this week to promote Spin Me Round with ComicBook.com, Brie said she may want to play a Marvel villain in the future.
“I think there’s a fantasy deep in my mind that one day I would get to play a great Marvel villain, but I don’t know which one that would be,” she told the website. “People, fans, send me some ideas so I can start the campaign.”
According to IMDB, Alison will voice an unknown character in episode 1 of Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur which is currently in post-production and set to stream on Disney+ in the future.
Her first connection to Marvel can be traced back to 2016 when she was credited with voicing Black Widow for the video game Marvel Avengers Academy.
Similar to the way fans sparked her She-Hulk campaign following the rumor, they have also expressed some desire for her to play Squirrel Girl on social media.
There’s still plenty of MCU phases and characters left to get Alison on board. The decision is in Marvel Studios’ hands, but there’s no doubt given the public support she’s gotten and her chops as a comedic actress, and overall range, that casting her would be a wise decision.
