Singer Ricky Martin is scheduled to appear in court Thursday in response to a domestic violence restraining order against him, which was reportedly filed by his nephew over harassment allegations which the performer has vehemently denied.
Key Facts
On July 2, a judge in Puerto Rico issued a restraining order against Martin which was filed under the territory’s domestic violence law by an unnamed man who said Martin continued to call him and loiter outside his home after the two ended a seven-month-long relationship, according to Reuters.
Police said Martin has not been charged with any crimes, according to the Associated Press.
Martin tweeted the protective order, which expires Thursday, “is based on completely false allegations,” and representatives for the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer told the Associated Press “when the true facts come out in this matter our client Ricky Martin will be fully vindicated.”
On July 13, Spanish news site Marca reported one of Martin’s brothers, Eric Martin, said the petitioner is the singer’s 21-year–old nephew.
Martin’s attorney, Martin Singer, told Variety the idea that Martin has been “involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew” is “not only untrue, it is disgusting.”
Singer said the nephew is “struggling with deep mental health challenges” and “we all hope that this man gets the help he so urgently needs.”
Neither Martin nor the nephew have publicly addressed the allegations.
Key Background
In June, Martin’s former talent manager Rebecca Drucker sued him for $3 million in unpaid commissions. In the suit, she alleged Martin has tried to “force her to sign an agreement with a nondisclosure clause to silence Rebecca about the abhorrent behavior by Martin that she has both witnessed and endured.” The suit made reference to a “toxic work environment” as well as potentially “career-ending allegations” Martin was allegedly “threatened with” in 2020, according to Deadline. Last week, Martin, 50, released an E.P. tilted Play. In 2018, Martin starred as Antonio D’Amico in the TV mini-series The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. In May it was announced he would star alongside Kristin Wiig, Alison Janey and Laura Dern in the Apple TV+ series Mrs. American Pie. Martin has been married to Jwan Yosef since 2017.
