Topline
A man working for the police show Law & Order: Organized Crime was shot and killed Tuesday while enforcing a parking ban for the production, a New York City Police Department detective told Forbes.
Key Facts
Johnny Pizzaro, 31, was sitting in a vehicle in the Greenpoint neighborhood around 5:15 a.m. to enforce “no parking” rules in the area, when a gunman approached, opened the driver’s car door and shot him multiple times in the face and neck, an NYPD detective said.
Pizzaro was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after.
NBC and Universal Television, which produces the show, told Forbes in a statement they are “incredibly saddened” by the incident and are working with law enforcement as the killing is investigated.
The gunman—whom the NYPD described as a 5’4” man with a thin build, a black hoodie and black pants—fled the scene, according to police.
The alleged gunman’s motive was not immediately clear and no arrests have been made.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ office told Deadline it offers its “deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time,” and pledged to “work diligently to bring the suspect to justice and stem the tide of gun violence we are seeing.”
Forbes has asked the show’s executive producer Dick Wolf for comment.
Key Background
Greenpoint frequently hosts film and TV productions and is considered to be a relatively quiet neighborhood. Law & Order: Organized Crime stars franchise stalwart Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler. The spin-off premiered in 2021, and the third season is currently in production.
Tangent
Last year, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on the New Mexico set of the movie Rust when a gun in actor Alec Baldwin’s hand fired, also wounding the production’s director. Baldwin has insisted he didn’t pull the trigger. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the incident and no arrests have been made.
