The results are in and the 2022 Emmys have some clear winners when it comes to nominees, giving us a good sense of which shows stand to bring home the most awards on September 12th.
Leading the pack is HBO’s Succession with 25 nods, five more than the second place show, Apple TV’s Ted Lasso. Leading the limited-series category is another HBO gem, The White Lotus.
After last year’s messy counting process left streamers and networks bickering and arguing over who had the most nominations and wins, the Television Academy decided to ditch counting network totals entirely in 2022. That won’t stop HBO and Netflix and Paramount and all the rest from tallying their nods (and later, wins) but for the time being we can ignore bragging rights.
Instead, the Emmys this year will be less about the platforms and streamers and networks, and more focused on the shows themselves, their creators and the stars who make them shine.
Emmys 2022 Snubs
There are also some unfortunate snubs in this year’s Emmys nominations—but not all shows that air in 2022 will be up for nominations. Only shows that aired between June 1st, 2021 and May 31st, 2022 are up for this year’s Emmys awards. That means popular shows like Westworld and The Boys won’t make the cut until 2023 despite offering up excellent new seasons. Same goes for The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale.
But there are actual snubs and some of them are very unfortunate. One of the best shows I’ve seen recently is FX’s Reservation Dogs, about a group of teenage Native Americans trying to cope with grief and carve out a better life. It’s endearing, funny and at times profoundly sad and it deserved—at the very least—some nominations this year.
Basically no superhero or Star Wars shows were nominated unless you count Stranger Things as a superhero drama, which it is to some extent. Mostly, Disney’s offerings this year were not stellar, however. But Peacemaker was quite good and John Cena would have been a good Comedic Actor nominee.
Fans of Better Things will be upset that the show and creator Pamela Adlon was snubbed entirely in its final season. The always terrific Gary Oldman was also snubbed despite his stellar performance in Slow Horses on Apple TV. The wildly popular Yellowstone drama was also left out in the cold.
Remarkably, Gaslit superstars Sean Penn and Julia Roberts were also snubbed this year. And unless I’m much mistaken, the excellent and underrated HBO Max sci-fi drama Raised By Wolves was also snubbed, adding insult to injury after its recent cancellation despite being one of the best things on TV.
Of course, many of my favorite shows of 2022 are among the nominees, including Ted Lasso and Stranger Things. I have to admit, I’ve never watched Succession but I guess I’ll add that to my ever-growing backlog!
Highlights for my TV viewing this year include the debut season of Yellowjackets, the shocking Netflix megahit Squid Game, AMC’s final season of Better Call Saul and the return of HBO’s Barry.
I’ve also enjoyed Steve Martin and Martin Short’s comedy mystery Only Murders In The Building and Apple TV’s surprisingly twisted gem Severance.
I’ll have a breakdown of my favorite TV shows of 2022 so far in a separate post here on this blog. You can also follow me on Twitter or Facebook.
