Telemundo Global Studios To Open Mexico City Production Unit

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises is expanding its production footprint. It will open its first ever owned and operated production unit in Mexico City. Under the umbrella of Miami-based Telemundo Global Studios, Telemundo Global Studios Mexico will increase the company’s on-the-ground production capabilities of scripted and unscripted content.

Its first project, currently in pre-production, is the eighth season of the hit Super Series El Senor de los Cielos, which will be shot on location in Mexico.

Telemundo has previously shot numerous series on location in Mexico with various production companies, including Argos Comunicación and Estudios Teleméxico but according to Karen Barroeta, EVP of Production and Development for Telemundo Global Studios, having its own production unit will be a game changer.

“This new production arm in Mexico – a key market for us — fits well into our original production strategy allowing us to produce first hand in the market, the same way we do in the U.S.,” she says. “For years, we have worked with various local production houses in Mexico that have done great work for us, however as we work on increasing our volume and production capabilities in the region, it’s a key step to take the lead of our productions not only from a creative perspective but also from an operational and financial standpoint.”

Telemundo has yet to reveal the location of its new Mexico City production facility. No word yet on whether the company will build it from scratch, acquire an existing studio or how much it will invest, but Barroeta reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its Mexico expansion.

“We have been investing in a variety of resources in the Mexican market and this strategy confirms our commitment to continue doing so.”

According to the company, its Mexico production arm will significantly expand Telemundo Global Studios production capabilities and provide a home for top creative talent to produce high quality content for Spanish-speaking audiences in the U.S., Latin America and the rest of the world.
