Sony revealed June’s free PlayStation Plus games Wednesday, and it’s a pretty great lineup headed to PS4 and PS5 next Tuesday.
Well, perhaps not a great lineup overall, but it includes one truly great game and two reasonably okay games and that’s all you can really ask for when it comes to PS Plus any given month.
The really great game is the 2018 God Of War reboot, a game that pushed the adventures of Kratos to new graphical and emotional heights while wildly overhauling combat and cameras. The new God Of War is more up close and personal in just about every fathomable way, and it works surprisingly well—in no small part thanks to the remarkable performances of Kratos actor Christopher Judge, and Atreus actor Sunny Suljic along with the rest of the phenomenal supporting cast.
The less arcadey combat and pulled in camera, along with some of the PS4’s best graphics, make this an unmissable addition to the PlayStation lineup (though it’s rather awesome on PC as well).
The other two free games are ones I have not had the good fortune to play, so I can’t really vouch for or against them, though both have Metacritic scores in the 60s’ range, which isn’t super. They are:
Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker
The PlayStation announcement describes this game thusly: “The Naruto franchise goes 4 vs. 4, featuring team-based gameplay with 8 ninjas fighting simultaneously. Players cooperate as a team of four to compete against other teams online. Graphically, Shinobi Striker is also built from the ground up in a completely new graphic style. Lead your team and fight online to see who the best ninjas are.”
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl | PS4/PS5
“Brawl it out as your favorite Nickelodeon characters in bombastic platform battles. With a power-packed cast of heroes from the Nickelodeon universe, face-off with all-stars from SpongeBob Squarepants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Loud House, Danny Phantom, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, The Wild Thornberrys, Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, and more to determine ultimate animation dominance. With unique move sets and attacks inspired by their personalities, each character has an individual style of play enabling endless action for Nickelodeon’s legion of fans. “
These feel timely given the hype surrounding Warner Bros’ upcoming brawler MultiVersus this summer, a Smash Bros clone that features all your favorite Warner Bros characters, from Scooby Doo to Harley Quinn.
In any case, all three of these games will be available to download next Tuesday, June 7th on PS4 and PS5. The new multi-tiered PS Plus is also coming this month. You can read more about that right here.
