‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Season 2 Should Be Inevitable, Here’s Why

If you’ve finished The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix, a solid weekend binge, you may be wondering if its lingering plot threads will continue forward for season 2. Given that this is Netflix we’re talking about, killer of shows, it’s far from a sure thing.

And yet, in the case of The Lincoln Lawyer, the evidence seems stacked that a season 2 renewal should be inevitable. Why?

1) Strong Performance – The Lincoln Lawyer debuted almost instantly at #1 in the US, and while we don’t know how long it will remain there, it unseated Ozark and seems like it may be planted there for at least a week. I expect “hours viewed” for its first week will be high when Netflix releases those.

2) Global Appeal – And it’s not just doing well in the US. The Lincoln Lawyer has hit #1 in 50+ regions around the world, something that Netflix desperately wants to see as its biggest growth markets are in countries outside its home region of the United States. The decision to make Mickey Haller Mexican-American in this version may also have something to do with its expanded appeal.

3) Relatively Low Cost – This is a legal drama. It shoots in a few locations, but it does not have wild computer effects or crazy action sequences. At baseline, that should make it a lower cost than many other series. On top of that, the cast, while talented, are not exactly A-list superstars. The biggest “name” in the series is probably Neve Campbell, and while star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is great, he is also not Matthew McConaughey from the original film, who would no doubt be demanding a huge paycheck to appear. Though I will say give everyone a raise who returns.

4) Source Material – There are six Lincoln Lawyer books from author Michael Connelly. This show adapted the second when the original film adapted the first. That means there’s a whole lot more potential scripts already almost written, and just waiting to be adapted. They’re best-selling books so they’re pretty good stories at baseline, so there’s a lower risk that future seasons will flat-out suck, given that the blueprint is already there.

Combine all four of these things and I think you have a recipe for at least two seasons, if not a longer term project that adapts the full run of the books. While I understand fans fretting about renewal for most Netflix shows, The Lincoln Lawyer feels like one where you can be confident that Netflix will probably choose to continue the story for at least another year, if not more than that. Stay tuned for an announcement.
